Thanks Gonna Change Around Here!
Things are always changing. Little changes everyday–the weather, the plants and trees around us, daylight, how we’re feeling, what’s happening in our relationships, the work we’re doing, what we dream about, what we long for and what we aspire to be. Paying attention to change helps us adjust what we’re doing and shift our actions to better match our aspirations.
I’m often so adaptable to circumstances that I’m really slow to enact changes. But recently, there have been a few pointers that have made me realize it’s time to stop adapting and start changing.
A few weeks ago the French Laundry Dry Cleaners here in Fairfax caught fire in the middle of the night and was gutted. This happened just around the corner from my home and studio. It was sobering to stand around with my neighbors in our pajamas and blankets and watch the flames shooting out of the top of the building and the firemen hosing down the little house next to it. If the fire had spread, it could have burnt down our whole neighborhood!
This incident made me seriously think about the fire proofing in the kiln area of my studio. It was never built to be a ceramic’s studio and I’ve been adapting it ever since. Well, it’s time to change! We’re putting up cement board, insulation, a giant custom kiln hood and an extractor fan. This is super inconvenient right now but also absolutely necessary. I’m in the final weeks of my biggest class session ever and this would normally be the time for lots of glaze firing but… it will have to wait and happen when it’s safe to happen.
I’ve also realized that if my classes are going to continue to grow like this session, I need to change how I use my studio space. It’s definitely under-organized for this many people with this much work. Every single surface available is covered! So, when this session is all wrapped up and we’ve had a little holiday break, I think I’ll drag everything out of the studio, change it up and re-organize everything. Then the future classes will run more smoothly and be more organized.
A BIG, BIG thank you to my students for being so understanding and accommodating with everything that’s going on!
