In Gratitude

I hope this finds you all well and staying safe in this new, stressful and uncertain time. This newsletter was going to be on throwing as a continuation of the previous one on handbuilding, but so much has changed since then. I wanted to just reach out to everybody instead. I know we’re all in this together, but of course everybody has their own things to deal with. Some have school age kids that are now distance-learning from home, some have been furloughed and don’t know about the future of work, and everyone is worried–about going to the store, touching their own face, and especially about all the people we love (that we can only talk to and not hug).
With so many unknowns there is one thing I’m certain of–I have a lot to be grateful for! My studio is just behind my house so even with this shelter-in-place order I still can go out and work on things, and because I work part time in a grocery store, I still have a job–although with reduced hours. Both of these feel so important right now.

Many things are very different of course. All kinds of shows are being canceled. Two of my pieces were going to be in Contemporary Clay at the Art Center of Western Colorado in June. Right now it’s uncertain if this show will go on, but at least it will be online if not physical. Marin Open Studios is also canceled this year. So we won’t be able to get together and show our new work and funky studios. But, as soon as we can gather, I plan on having my own Open Studio.
I started our newest class session, but we were only able to get together once before I had to put the classes on hold. They will resume some time, I just don’t know when that will be. Until then, we stay creative and do the best we can.

These are two big, new Sentries, ready for firing!

If you’re able to work with clay at home, please be careful. I made a little video about working safely, it’s not a very sexy topic but probably the first one you should see!

Working with our hands is so helpful in relieving stress and anxiety, so use what you have to make what you can! Maybe some scrap booking as a way to sort family photos, or a little baking to spread some cheer–a couple of cookies and a cup of tea while sitting in the sun does wonders! How about organizing a closet? I always feel so virtuous when it’s finished. Maybe paper cutting?

I paper cut this little dragon for Sisi on her birthday last year!

My favorite way to combat stress–gardening! It’s outside, useful, easy to see progress and I feel so happy when my seeds sprout!

These new circumstances have inspired me to start a new series of functional ware all about family. It’s made me think about what makes up families, and of course, they’re all a big mix! My idea is to make dinner plates, small plates and bowls of different kinds that are still harmonious, then everyone can mix-and-match just like a family! I’ll post some updates as they develop.
I’m also increasing the work available in my online store. So, if you’re looking for a new, special mug or a piece of art to sooth your soul, please check the home page on this website!

Please stay safe, think positively and remember what you’re grateful for. We will definitely get through this together!

  • Hi Shoshi!!!
I wonder if you are able to sell us clay to work on at home and then bring to have you fire at some point in the future? I say this and remember that I have many items possibly still crowding your shelves from years (?!) ago…but if they’ve found a new home that is fine too!

    • Hi Annie,
I have both clay and old(ish) work for you! Would you like the white or brown clay? They are both $15 a bag.

  • Thank you Shoshana for all the info. about working with clay at home. I have a baseball size ball that one of these days I’ll make into something yet to be determined.
    Stay healthy! Stay sane!
