New Perspective

I recently went to see my friend Jefferey Beauchamp’s show at the Seager/Gray Gallery in Mill Valley.  It was beautiful!  I’ve known Jeff for more than twenty years and  of course his art has changed over that time.  I realized that somewhere durring that time he has become a master of his medium.  He can realize any idea he wants in his painting and then throw in some elements to surprize you and make you look at the whole picture again, with a new perspective.   This one is called Proper and Common, some of my[…]

What do we want from life?

I’ve been experiencing the plague of modern life lately–feeling that all my time is overbooked with high expectations of fitting everything into 24 hours.  Either I have work or daily life maintenance, like laundry, grocery shopping, dinner cooking, etc. and some how I’m suppose to fit in exercise and relaxing too. But then there’s this precious time that’s carved out to do the thing I love so much–ceramics!  It’s so rewarding. Glaze Firing Day

My goal is to make 60 objects in 120 days including glazing and firing, and production is coming right along. The funny thing is although I have all day in the studio, it’s hard to concentrate on building or glazing. The lesson must be to schedule OTHER studio tasks on firing days. Hope everything turns out!

New Portfolio Page

Check out my new portfolio page.  I’ve been making a bunch of one-of-a-kind mugs for people lately and here they are.  Some are for a specific drink–this one is for ginger tea–and some are about something the person really loves–like the sea.  Hope you enjoy them!

Sometimes it’s a sculpture–and that’s freedom. Freedom to make something that meets only my aesthetic requirements. Freedom to explore an idea and change my mind and to respond to the thing I’m making.  Freedom to follow the process, see where it takes me and feel the joy. Sometimes it’s a useful object–and that’s love.  To make and object for someone else–a cup, a bowl, a plate–is to give them pleasure in eating, and happiness and love along with their food.  A useful object has to meet a lot of given requirements; it has to be[…]
