June & July News

TuleriaDSC_0008Last month I had my first experience participating in Marin Open Studios and it was quite gratifying.  Before I set everything up I worried that there might not be enough work.  I had three big sculptures–two of which were new, a few smaller ones, a collection of mugs and bowls–some from last year and some new, and maybe some older work that was still at my studio.  But as I started to gather work together, I kept discovering pieces that were hidden away. The best part was as I pulled them out–I still liked them and thought they were good works.

When I gathered all my teapots together I realized how many there were and that they made a dynamic grouping. I also came across a box of pit fired tiles with sculptural relief on them and they looked beautiful on the wall.  I decided to mount two sculptures that I made as wall pieces but were living in boxes. And I also had a lot of work around that I use as examples when I’m teaching.  So I ended up with quite a full studio which ran the spectrum from old work to my newest, there were sculptures and functional ware and even some funny little creatures I make in class some times.doodads shelf

One great thing about having opportunity to show my whole studio was the interest people showed in all the stuff I have around as inspiration, or little parts that haven’t been assembled yet and a few people even wanted just the little parts.

It was also gratifying that so many different people showed up.  There were friends and family of course, and also students of mine, people I know from town who weren’t familiar with my work, neighbors  I had never met came to see and even complete strangers 🙂

People were very supportive and interested, it was great to talk to so many about my passion and get their feedback.

The mPostcardFrontFinalost recent event for me is the California Now show at the Richmond Art Center.  It’s featuring new and innovative work in clay, enamel, and glass.  It opened on June 14th and runs until August 21st.  So stop by and see some great work from 66 artists–including me!
